(Sarasota, FL) The Florida Broadcaster’s Club will hold its first luncheon of the 2011/12 season on Friday October 14 at the SaraBay Golf Club in Sarasota. Broadcaster Don Blair, who was a news anchor and reporter for Mutual Radio Network and NBC Radio news, will be the speaker and will show a video tribute to longtime club member Bob Trendler who passed away on July 18 at the age of 99.
Bob Trendler was a broadcast veteran of legendary Chicago television station WGN. Blair interviewed Trendler for his “Broadcast Biography” series which aired on METV and Sarasota’s Education Channel. The video recounts Bob Trendler’s career from his first spot in broadcasting at 11 as a singer in 1923 on Cincinnati's WLW up to and beyond his retirement from the industry in 1975.
Bob Trendler was the longest tenured member of the Florida Broadcaster’s Club attending just about every luncheon. He wrote music, arranged and conducted before large orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony. He created the famed Chicago Theater of the Air which ran for decades on WGN, in the process introducing a young singer named Mike Douglas to the world who went on to host a long running talk show. In addition he was the conductor on the “Bozo the Clown” show in Chicago.
