Florida’s tiny Post Office, the smallest in the USA was once a storage shed for irrigation pipes for a nearby tomato farm. In 1993, it was deemed a post office. This took place because a fire had destroyed Ochopee’s previous post office and general store.
It is located in Ochopee, Florida about 3 miles east of US4a and State Road 29. The United States Postal Service knows it as 1842US.
If you decide to visit this famous post office, don’t be alarmed if it is temporarily closed. There are no bathroom facilities, so the clerk would have to go to a Subway Sandwich Shop (about 3 miles west) or the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters ( 1 mile east). If you stop by, there will be Ochopee Post Office post cards on the counter there are prestamped.
This closet-sized post office (7 foot wide x 8 feel deep) has a telephone, computer, a fluorescent tube for light and a pair of tiny sliding screen doors to keep out giant horseflies.
This post office receives visits from people all over the world who want to get something postmarked. The person who delivers mail from this post office has quite a trek. The daily route that stretches across three counties, 132 miles long.
It is known that the United States Post Office could be closing some of the small post offices, so I did check and found out that the smallest post office in Ochopee Florida is still open.
