Once again, Florida comes through with 4 of the top 10 spots on the annual Dr. Beach Top 10 Beaches list. It's no surprise that Florida ranks high on the list. It would definitely be a surprise if Florida didn't make a top or best of list. The state also did pretty good in rankings based on reviews by travelers who shared their experience on TripAdvisor's top 25 list. So who made it and who didn't? Here are the winners. Check it out and see if your favorite beach has what it takes to make it to the top of the list.
Dr. Beach Top 10 Beaches 2014
Ranked #2 is Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park in Bonita Springs which is a short drive from Naples for those not familiar with the west coast region. The park features 342 acres of undeveloped beach which means peace and quiet so you can enjoy the surroundings. The park is lined by the emerald waters of the Gulf and inland, the mangrove swamps provide interesting habitats and inhabitants for a variety of birds who nest in the area. Loggerhead turtles and gopher tortoises also make the park their home. Facilities are onsite along with a picnic area. Parking is limited, so get there early.
Coming in at #3 is St George Island State Park located in the panhandle on a barrier island in the Gulf. Enjoy swimming in the clear blue water and sunbathe in the brilliant Florida sunshine or go fishing or snorkeling. Full camping facilities are available as well as primitive sites reachable only by boat or making your way along a 2.5-mile trail.
Number 7 on the list is Cape Florida State Park at the southern end of Key Biscayne on the east coast. This beach has been on the list more than once, so you know it must be a beauty with everything beach lovers could want. It, too, has a long expanse of sugar white sand lining emerald green water and further out, the deep blue of the Atlantic. The natural surroundings beckon exploration of nature trails, kayaking, biking, and observing the ritual of the sea turtles in the summer. While visiting, make time to walk the 100+ steps of the historic lighthouse originally constructed in 1825.
This year's #10 spot goes to Delnor-Wiggins State Park in Naples. Another of the west coast beaches that surpass a traveler's dreams. Also located on a barrier island, you'll feel like you're on your own personal oasis surrounded by serenity and natural beauty. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, sailing or just strolling the beach at sunset past the palms and sea oats is the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of a Florida beach.
