The “Arts” keep us humane and through music, theatrical and other media performances, or viewing the works of artistic greats as Picasso or Michelangelo, we are touched emotionally to experience a spectrum of feelings from happy to sad to joyful then bleak to sheer ecstasy. The ‘Arts’ arouses emotions from cynical to whimsical all in one play, movie or musical recital
Inclusion of the ‘Arts’ from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Art, Math), is thought by some educators as being evolutional in addressing the academic and social benefits in assuring a well-grounded and balanced curriculum for all students in the 21st Century scheme of conservation and creativity for a functioning economic society.
In May of this year as part of Floresta Elementary’s Positive Behavior Intervention Support Program, Riverside Community Theatre presented to all grade 2-5 students, the performance entitled “The Wolf and Its Shadows.” Based on Aesop’s fable “The Dog and the Wolf”. The play weaves together stories about wolves, dogs, and humans, and includes tales from Russian, Tlingit, English, Inuit and German folklore.
In critiquing “The Wolf and Its Shadows”, the following were student comments of the play (as written by Suzanne Diaz), that the message according to some was, “Don’t be influenced by the opinions of others.” For other students, the message was, “Freedom is worth more than being served as royalty.” Alexandria Howlett stated that she liked the play and thought that while it was funny at times, it had an important message. Seth Excellent said it was entertaining, hilarious, and he hopes to see more plays like that one performed at the school. Alanzandria Delphin feels that it was a very worthwhile event.
Art invokes expression which is a key attribute in communication of all disciplines and is a vital tool for stimulation of a student’s writing and/or oral presentations.
