As a floral design instructor and the owner of a floral arrangement school, I always do my best to provide instructions so that students can eventually enjoy the variations of floral designs no matter which floral art they learn, European arrangement or Japanese Ikebana.
Even if students are very resourceful and skillful, it is usually difficult for them to enjoy variations from the first beginning stage. Namely unless they earn decent skills of arrangement as well as they fully understand the concept of designing, it is usually difficult to enjoy applied designs.
This means how important to earn decent skills of basic floral arrangement before moving forward to even higher level of designs that usually require variations developed from basic arrangements.
There are variations developed from basic arrangements and also created from another concept of designs such as developing new concept of arrangements by way of blending European designs and Japanese traditional floral art.
Among uncountable floral designers who are actively engaged in flower arranging , some of them introduce quite unique and creative decorations. And we can often find that such designers have arranging skills of European and Japanese way of decorations as well. If they have the ability of blending both types of floral art, it is not so difficult to make variations in floral arrangements.
Once in a while we have students who are quite resourceful and skillful at our floral school. After such students earn decent skills of basic arrangements, they sometimes want to challenge making a little bit higher level of flower decorations which reflect their own design concept. Quite frankly speaking only limited number of students qualify to challenge in this way. Judging from the level of their floral arranging skill and ability, if I find it quite enough to challenge making variations, I sometimes set up series of special lessons.
During such special lessons, most of the time is usually spent for students to learn a kind of custom designed arrangement that often requires variations from basic floral decorations. I am teaching floral art in the sincere hope that our students eventually reach the high level of arrangements with which they can enjoy making their own designs with variations from basic floral arrangements.
