Flogging Molly Review & Photos

Flogging Molly's Green 17 Tour came whirling through Detroit this past Friday at the Fillmore. Guinness and Jameson was flowing freely and Flogging Molly spread their Irish merriment throughout the crowd with their Celtic rock music. They are a fine tuned music machine that always puts on a great show.

The hardworking and hard-playing members that complete this Irish ensemble are Dave King on lead vocals/guitar, Dennis Casey on electric and acoustic guitar, Matthew Hensley plays accordion, concertina, and piano, Nathan Maxwell on bass, Bridget Regan on violin, tin whistle, classical guitar, and uilleann pipes, Robert Schmidt on mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo, and five string banjo, and George Schwindt on drums.

Joining in on spreading the good times and sharing the stage with Flogging Molly was Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. They are a blues band with an upbeat swinging sound influenced by James Brown and Howlin’ Wolf.

The sold out crowd inside the Fillmore was a swaying and rollicking, even if you weren’t Irish, you were an honorary one for the evening.

Flogging Molly took the stage in a flurry of energetic sound and charisma and opened with one of their classic songs “Drunken Lullabies.” Frontman Dave King always has such an energy about him that it seems to flow from him and out into the crowd. This energy translates into spontaneous dancing, jumping, swaying and loudly singing along.

They played a number of songs from their new album Speed of Darkness which included; “Speed of Darkness,” “Revolution,” “Saints & Sinners,” “The Power’s Out,” “A Prayer for me in Silence,” “Oliver Boy (All of Our Boys)” and “So Sail On.” Overall they played a total of 24 songs which included a 3 song encore. A great time was had by all!
