"Flight of The Conchords" not likely to return to HBO (with "Bowie" bonus video)

Are "The Conchords" done flying?  According to Jemaine Clement, sounds like it.

This will be depressing news for fans of HBO's "Flight of The Conchords": according to star (and producer on the show) Jemaine Clement, another season of the hilarious musical comedy ain't likely.  After you finish sobbing into your New Zealand-made beer, read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers...

HBO's "Flight of The Conchords" is unlike anything else on TV (and if you say "Glee" to me, I will slap your lips shut): a hilarious musical-based comedy with sharp writing and even sharper performances from its New Zealand-born stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie.  And, like any other good show on TV, it's very likely that we're not getting any more of it.

According to an article over at Reuters, "Flight of The Conchords" star Clement had this to say about the series' future:

It very likely might not" return for a third season, Clement said. "It could come back in a shorter season or like a special," he added.

What?!  Why not?!

We've got to write the series, but we've also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky," he said.

HBO, meanwhile, sounds like they're hoping that the pair can work out a third season for the show.  The second season of "Conchords" averaged 3.1 million viewers per episode-- nothing to sneeze at-- and maintained the ratings figures it was putting up during the first season.  When asked how they felt, HBO had the following to say:

We've left their future entirely in their hands," said Nancy Lesser, a spokeswoman for the network. "We would love to have more, and we left an open door at HBO."

We're big fans of "Flight of The Conchords" here at the Comedy Examiner's Office, so here's hoping that Jemaine and Bret can get their act together and start writing that third season post-haste.  Then again, it might be a better idea to quit while they're ahead rather than force out a sub-par product.  Hmmm: now we don't know how to feel about this.  Let's take a look at our absolute favorite "Conchords" song-- from our absolute favorite episode-- to help ease the pain:

Let us know what you think, "Conchords" fans: sound off in the comments section below.  Do you wanna see a third season of "Flight of The Conchords", or would you rather the "greatest folk-rock act in the world" bowed out gracefully?  Plug your opinion into that comments box below, folks!

And, when you're done, check out these other recent articles from the Comedy Examiner's Office:
