Flight MH370: Chinese satellite spots 'plane-like' object floating in ocean

Flight MH370 update: In the latest developments in the saga of missing Malaysian Flight MH370, news outlets are reporting this morning that a Chinese satellite has relayed imagery and information regarding a “plane-like” structure floating in the Indian Ocean.

Possible debris from Flight 370 was found in the southern Indian Ocean.

According to a report from The Associated Press today, the “large object” was located “along a broad stretch of ocean where officials hope to find a Malaysia Airlines plane that has been missing for more than two weeks.”

This recent finding of what could be fuselage debris of the Boeing 777 was seen 75 miles south of where another satellite found two objects earlier this week in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.

Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Saturday (Malaysia time) that the dimensions of the debris are approximately 22.5 meters (74 feet) by 13 meters (43 feet).

According to Boeing’s website, the specs from the 777 aircraft family are 242 feet in length and an interior cabin width of approximately 20 feet, with a wingspan of 60 feet.

Investigators surmised that the debris, which appears to be the best lead yet in the two week search for the missing airliner, may be a cabin section along with a portion of the wing.

“The news that I just received is that the Chinese ambassador received a satellite image of a floating object in the southern corridor and they will be sending ships to verify,” Hussein said.

Malaysia is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Time; media officials await confirmation on what was found, as do the hundreds of family members who have been left awash in grief over the disappearance of their loved ones and conflicting news items.

According to the AP report, “state broadcaster CCTV tweeted an image of the object and said it was captured around noon Tuesday.” The image can seen here via Twitter, and above.
