A flight diverted when a passenger tried to open an exit door in flight. A male passenger made an effort to open up an emergency exit in the rear of the plane during AirTran Flight 265 from Baltimore to Austin, Texas. According to Fox News on August 20, 2013, the plane made an unscheduled landing in Memphis.
The unidentified male passenger was escorted off the jet by airport police and was detained for evaluation by the FBI and the TSA.
Another passenger on the flight diverted said that the man made suicidal comment while on board. After he attempted to open the door, military passengers subdued him. He was held until the flight landed safely in Memphis. That was chosen because it was the closest AirTran airport, even though the incident occurred while they were flying over Little Rock, Ark.
The man who caused the flight to be diverted is as of yet to be charged. Passengers were taken off the flight and interviewed. The unruly passenger did not appear to be intoxicated. The plane contained 120 passengers and five crewmembers. It continued on to its destination in Austin two hours later. AirTran is a part of Southwest Airlines.
