It's that time of the year again! The time when people dress up, get together and... watch movies! Yes, the 28th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival gets underway this Friday, October 18 and runs all the way until November 11. The longest lasting and what many consider to be the best film festival in South Florida is already shaping up to be it's best year ever.
One constant signature of FLIFF is the stars it attracts and 2013 will be no different. Ann Margaret and Ed Asner are both schedule to receive Lifetime Achievement awards. Mr. Asner will even give a short, live performance on stage from his One-Man Show, "FDR". Oscar winning actress Anna Paquin was scheduled to appear at the film festival too. She is starring in the opening night film, "Free Ride" which she produced along with her husband and "True Blood" co-star, Stephen Moyer. Anna can no longer make it to Fort Lauderdale, but Mr. Moyer will be present to accept her Career Achievement award on Friday night. The film's director and writer, Shana Betz will also be there. Lea Thompson will be be present for the opening weekend festivities and receive a Career Achievement award of her own. She stars in "The Trouble with the Truth" in which she is also the Executive Producer. In addition, there will be a special outdoor screening of the original "Back to the Future" where Lea will be giving a special introduction to the beloved movie.
The plethora of films being shown at FLIFF this year will have something for everyone and they come from all around the world. Some of the movies you may have heard of like "Last Vegas", "Nebraska" and "August: Osage County". Others you may not have like "Love is in the Air (Amour & Turbulences)", "One Chance" and "Garibaldi's Lovers", but they all deserve to be checked out. The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival not only has a great reputation for showing great films, they are also know for putting on amazing parties. This year's opening night party will probably be remember for as long as there is a FLIFF. It is taking place at Steve Savor's 18,000 square foot mansion, Villa de Palma just off Las Olas. The party will begin a 8:30pm and there will be shuttles going between Cinema Paradiso and the party. The affair has a Great Gatsby theme to it and only those appropriately dressed will be admitted. Other notable events are the Chairman's Award Gala (Michael Bolton will be performing), the Chairman's Cruise and the wrap party. A number of filmmakers who have had their worked shown at FLIFF in the past along with some local talent will be at FLIFF 28 too. It has become a FLIFF tradition to have the brother and sister filmmaking team of Isaak and Eva James to have something new to show every other year. Their newest work, "By the Way of Home" will have it's Florida Premiere at FLIFF. Paul Osborne had one of the best documentaries FLIFF has ever seen in 2009 with "Official Rejection". He returns in 2013. This time he has a work of fiction with "Favor", a film that has been getting a lot of good, early buzz. The Fort Lauderdale International Film has always been proud to show off local talent and this year local film director, author and actor, Alyn Darney will world premiere his latest comedy, "Krissy Belle".
South Florida has many great film festivals that go on throughout the year, but FLIFF is many people's favorite and for a good reason. They show so many good films, put on unforgettable events and allows people to hobnob with so many talented people from the film community.
