Flax bread for heart health

American Heart Month is drawing to a close. Hopefully, many Angelenos will continue with a heart healthy diet in the upcoming months. One product that can promote heart health is flax bread, which is produced by a local company, Corona-based Food for Life. Not only is the product heart healthy but also is quite tasty. It is made from a 2,500-year-old biblical recipe; however, those of non-Christian faiths—or no faith—should give it a try.

Food for Life notes that, like all its products, its Ezekiel 4:9® Sprouted Flax Bread* is 100% flourless and free of conditioners, additives, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. The bread is made from sprouted grains, which the company claims it grows through an exclusive sprouting process in which enzymes are activated and cause the grains to become living and nutrient-dense while enhancing digestibility. In addition, the combination of the six grains, legumes and seeds described in Ezekiel 4:9 creates a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids (similar to milk and eggs), while decreasing the calories and carbohydrates found in the original grain. Unlike commercial breads that are “enriched” and “fortified” to restore vitamins and nutrients that are lost during processing method, Ezekiel 4:9® Sprouted Flax Bread is naturally flavorful and nutritious.

The bread is made with filtered water and no added fat; it is low-glycemic, diabetic-friendly, pH-balanced and kosher-certified. Each slice of contains 90 milligrams of Omega 3, 5 grams of protein, 4 grams of dietary fiber and 18 amino acids from vegetable sources. “Beyond its health benefits, the addition of flax imparts a nutty flavor while also contributing to a more tender and moist texture,” notes Gary Torres, a Food for Life company principal.

Food for Life’s Ezekiel 4:9® Sprouted Flax Bread is available at natural food stores and better supermarkets across the US for a suggested retail price of $4.09. To ensure freshness, the sprouted bread is usually available in the frozen section. For more information or for a list of where to buy, click on this link.
