Flavor Flav and his trademark clock took a turn in court on Tuesday to plead not guilty to speeding charges, according to a Jan. 28 Billboard report. The rapper and reality television star was charged with speeding and driving without a license, a felony, earlier this month as he drove to his mother’s funeral in New York.
According to CBS New York News, Nassau County District Court Judge Norman St. George released Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., without bail. Flav’s attorney told the judge that she and her client have worked feverishly over the past few days to clear up over 15 outstanding traffic matters that led to the charges against the 54-year-old rapper.
Considering the circumstances and reasons surrounding the speeding incident, the rapper told reporters that he hopes the charges will be dismissed. “I’m hoping they would have a heart and dismiss it all because of the circumstances,” he said. “Because if it wasn’t for me driving to my mother’s funeral and being late getting to my mother’s funeral, I wouldn’t have been behind the wheel in the first place to get the charge.”
He is scheduled to return to court on Friday.
