Flat Shoals

This cascade gives the Flat Shoals River its name. It is relatively small, dropping about 6 feet over a run of about 50 feet. There is a nice sand beach at the bottom of the shoals so this is probably a popular local spot.

From the intersection of SC 11 and SC 183 just outside Walhalla, take SC 11 north for 6.9 miles to Flat Shoals Road on your right. Flat Shoals Road is a loop and actually has another intersection with SC 11 earlier on. It really doesn’t matter which intersection you use, both will take you to the bridge crossing the river at the shoals.

Assuming you’re taking the upper entrance, it is 2.5 miles to the river. On the left, just before the bridge is a place to park. It is blocked with a metal barricade. It is just a short distance down to the shoals, which has an excellent base pool for swimming along with the sand beach. A sharp eye may also find fresh water clams.
