Flashback with 'FLASHDANCE' (Photos)

Popular 80's songs “Maniac,” “Gloria,” “Manhunt,” “I Love Rock & Roll,” along with Academy-Award winning title song “What A Feeling” lay the foundation for 'FLASHDANCE.' The musical spends one week in New Orleans at the end of February on its national tour, celebrating the show's 30th anniversary before it sets the stage on Broadway this August.

Based on the 1983 film directed by Adrian Lyne, the story follows Alex Owens (18) on an inspiring, electrifying balance between moonlight dance and day-playing steel mill welder in Pittsburgh. Her dream is to become a professional dance performer. Romance with her boss incites complications, however, and challenges her ambitions to the point where she must learn how to channel love's power into the pursuit of her dreams.

16 songs have been added to the stage version, with lyrics by Robert Cary, and lyrics and music by Robbie Roth.

For those curious fans of the 80's cinematic hit, there are the expected changes in adaptation. However, Thomas Hedley, Jr., screenwriter of the film, is part of the stage show's creative team. Additionally, Robert Cary, the lyricist, is credited with other screen-to-stage adaptations (The Thomas Crown Affair).

Sergio Trujillo directs and choreographs the stage adaptation. His choreography work has been recognised across North America, Europe, and Asia. His 2006 Tony and Olivier Award winning Best Musical Jersey Boys, recently held a three-week run at the Mahalia Jackson back in January.

'FLASHDANCE' greets New Orleans audiences on Tuesday, 26 February. At 8p.m. Shows run through 3 March, with 2p.m. matinee performances on Saturday (2 March) and Sunday (3 March). Final NOLA performance is on 3 March at 7:30p.m.

Get tickets now through TicketMaster, or at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre box office for as little as $32. Please be mindful, however, that 'FLASHDANCE' contains adult content and is not recommended for younger audiences.
