Flash Flood Watch: Heavy rain for DFW area

Dallas, Fort Worth and much of north Texas is in line for widespread rainfall, and some of it will be very heavy. A Flash Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service runs from Thursday, July 17 at 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. on Friday the 18th.

It’s a rather classic heavy rain pattern for north Texas with a deep flow of moisture moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico, while a strong mid-level low moves southeastward in the jet stream flow.

The low provides lifting which will generate a large area of rain and thunderstorms. A cold front will form along a surface low to our north Thursday evening and push southeastward through north Texas on Friday, followed by decreasing rain potential.

The HPC map included with this article suggests precipitation may exceed six inches along the Red River counties of north Texas with the Metroplex in line for amounts in the one to three inch range. However, one should not focus on the exact location of each precipitation contour as much as on the overall pattern: heavy rainfall and some if it could cause some flooding issues.

Please, never drive into flooded areas as most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles. Turn around….don’t drown.

The good news is that high rainfall rates expected should provide some decent runoff into north Texas lakes.

The extended forecast into next week shows a return to a more typical mid-summer pattern with a large upper building to our west and pushing temperatures upward into the 95 to 100-degree range.
