The City of Chicago is putting its considerable weight behind a flash fiction writing contest inspired by Saul Bellow's The Adventures of Augie March. Nothing in the 600-page epic bildungsroman suggests brevity but the CPL encourages us to "submit their short version of their 'I am American, Chicago born' in 750 words or less." Augie March
is the Fall 2011 One Book, One Chicago selection.

Judged by Stuart Dybek
No entry fee
One entry per person
Entrants must live in Chicagoland

There are even more details at this link. Additionally, three finalists get to perform the selected pieces at the Stop Smiling Storefront, and the winner will get published in the revamped The Chicagoan, which has been revitalized by JC Gabel, founer of Stop Smiling.
Kudos to the Chicago Public Library for engaging Chicago readers, writers, and publishers alike with the latest innovation in the heralded One Book program.
