Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, Flames' forwards Michael Cammalleri scored with 8:55 left to pull the Flames within one. Then with five seconds left in regulation and the Flames on the power play because of a two minute minor roughing penalty to Blues' forward Patrik Berglund, defenseman Mark Giordano tied the game at three goals apiece to force extra time.
After five minutes of extra time settled nothing, Joe Colborne was the only player in the shootout to find the back of the net, while Flames goaltender Reto Berra stopped T.J. Oshie, Derek Roy and Magnus Paajarvi.
With the win, the Flames improve to 14-17-6, and the Blues drop to 24-7-5. Calgary will now have three days off for the Christmas break before hosting the Edmonton Oilers at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday.
