According to the Canadian Press, the Calgary Flames played the spoiler role to perfection on Monday evening as they defeated the New Jersey Devils 1-0.

The loss was massive for the Devils, who with a week left in the National Hockey League's regular season, are battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are currently in ninth place, and three points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets. New Jersey has three games left, while Columbus has four games left.

The Flames lone goal came on the power play, 23 seconds into the third period. Captain Mark Giordano took a slapshot from the point that beat Devils' goaltender Cory Schneider. Jiri Hudler and Michael Cammalleri picked up the assists.

Karri Ramo also sparkled in net for the Flames as he made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season.

The win might help the Flames' overall morale. Even though this was a regular season contest, it was like a playoff game for the Devils, and the Flames were spoilers in a huge way. If the Devils miss the playoffs, they should circle the date April 7 as a major reason why.

Calgary, which improves to 34-38-7, will now play home to Los Angeles on Wednesday.
