The Calgary Flames need to play a full three periods in order to win hockey games. On Sunday, they only played one and it was too little too late.
After trailing 1-0, the Nashville Predators scored two goals each in the first and second periods en route to a 5-3 win over the Flames.
It was a very strong game for Sergei Kostitsyn, who recorded a hat trick, including the game winning goal and the insurance marker into an empty net when the Flames were trying to make a strong comeback in the third period.
Flames captain Jarome Iginla scored his 499th career goal in the National Hockey League to open the scoring for Calgary, who lost their third straight game and are now two points back of the Dallas Stars for eighth place in the Western Conference.
After Iginla's opening goal, Nashville scored four straight goals before the Flames got on the board again early in the third period.
The Flames next play in Washington on Tuesday. In other Flames news, defenceman Cory Sarich has been fined $2,500 for a hit to the head on Ottawa Senators winger Erik Condra in the Flames' overtime loss to the Senators Friday night.
