Flames beat Sabres 3-1

According to TSN, the Calgary Flames defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Tuesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Former Buffalo Sabre Chris Butler led the Flames in scoring with two assists. Butler recorded his first assist on the Flames' game winning goal by Michael Cammalleri at 9:16 of the third period and then recorded his second assist on a shorthanded insurance marker by Paul Byron, who scored on the breakaway with 6:23 left in the contest.

Joni Ortio meanwhile only had to make 13 saves for his third victory of the season.

Sabres rookie goaltender Nathan Lieuwen of Abbotsford, British Columbia, got his first National Hockey League career start and made 23 saves.

Flames forward Matt Stajan was playing in his first NHL game since the death of his son on March 3.

The Flames are now 28-34-7 and 14 points back of the Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play the Nashville Predators in Calgary on Friday.
