According to Rogers Sportsnet, Mikael Backlund and Dennis Wideman each notched a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames defeated the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

The Flames also got goals from Sean Monahan and David Jones, and improved to 22-28-7 on the season. With the victory the Flames passed the Islanders in the National Hockey League overall standings.

Jones's goal for the Flames was the game winning marker at 14:28 of the third period from Stajan and Wideman to break a 2-2 deadlock. The Flames actually had a 2-0 lead in the second period only to see the Islanders march right back. Calgary native Thomas Hickey scored the equalizer for the Islanders. A defenseman, Hickey pinched into the play and generated an odd man rush.

Calgary will now play only more game before the 2014 Winter Olympic break. It will come Saturday morning when they face the Philadelphia Flyers.
