The mandatory rule has come in place after two Calgary Flames suffered severe feet injuries last week. Mark Giordano broke his ankle last Monday against the Los Angeles Kings, while Stempniak broke his foot in the Flames' game in Dallas last Thursday. Giordano is out six to eight weeks, while Stempniak is "week-to-week".
The feet injuries have occurred because Stempniak and Giordano were blocking shots.
The new Flames rule has already paid dividends. Recently, Flames center Matt Stajan blocked a shot but did not experience any significant injury because he used the padding.
The Flames next play the Detroit Red Wings Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The Red Wings are coming off an impressive 2-1 win in Vancouver last night.
