As the apex of the centennial celebration of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railway nears on Jan. 22, the day the train arrived from Miami into Key West with Flagler on board, appreciation of Florida Keys turn of the century history continues this evening with a free lecture.
The History of Diving Museum's Immerse Yourself! program Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. features "Henry Flagler: Florida's Patron of Progress and Technology" presented by Thomas Lockyear of the Shipwreck Treasures Museum in Key West. The diving museum is located at mile marker 83 bayside.
Listeners will step back in time and take a journey through Keys history to discover Flagler's contributions to the development of Florida as both a tourist destination and a desirable place to live and work. Lockyear will focus on technology and techniques developed specifically for the creation of the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway - and the employment of hard hat divers in its construction 100 years ago.
Visitors also may take advantage of the diving museum’s extended hours every third Wednesday of the month when the exhibits are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This month's Immerse Yourself! program is sponsored in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Forest Tek Lumber of Tavernier and Overseas Lumber Supply.
The History of Diving Museum is a non-profit museum open to the public daily from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, call 305-664-9737 or visit www.divingmuseum.org.
