South Jersey native Joe Flacco may receive the exclusive franchise tag from the Baltimore Ravens if the team cannot reach a long-term deal with their franchise quarterback.
The exclusive franchise tag carries an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at that respective player's position. There is speculation that Flacco will request $20 million per season in a new deal.
And, should he receive the franchise tag, he will make tentatively $20.464 million during the 2013 season. And by given the franchise tag to Flacco, he would not be able to talk to another deal and would give Baltimore all the negotiating rights.
This season, Flacco made $6.76 million and made an additional $2.1 million roster bonus. He is a free agent after the season.
On January 29th, 2012, Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome came out and said Flacco will be with the Ravens in 2013. He went so far to guarantee that Flacco will be back.
"We'll be able to get that thing done," Newsome said. "(He'll) be playing football for us next year. And sometimes that's all you can look forward to is just next year."
He hinted that the franchise tag will be used on Flacco before the start of free agency, then work towards a new deal before the franchise tag's July deadline on a new contract.
According to Newsome, the sides have a "good understanding" of where the other side stands.
