Letina Smith, 41, of Kissimmee, Fla. is currently being held in the Osceola County Jail on $3,000 bail after police charged her with separate counts of child abuse for zapping three young relatives under her care in what she described as a homemade electric chair.
On Feb. 3, Opposing Views reported that Smith was watching her cousin’s three children, two boys and one girl, all under the age of ten. According to Smith, she created a device she called “the electric chair” used to punish the children.
"(She) explained that the punishment was to get touched with a 'taser,'" the arrest report stated.
"The electric chair consists of the child who is in trouble holding themselves… with their back on the wall and their legs forming a chair. They have to stay there for an hour and if they speak or move Letina will come up to them with the electrical weapon, "taser," and activate and touch them with it.
This horrific form of abuse came to light when the little girl pleaded with one of her teachers “not to call her home when she misbehaved because she feared ‘the electric chair.’”
The school contacted the police and child services, who began interviewing the children. All of the kids’ stories about the home abuse and “the electric chair” all matched up.
One boy said “that it hurt very much and he was very afraid of it,” while the other described how “Letina touched him with the electrical weapon while it was activated and shocked him in the arm which woke him up” after he fell asleep in the car.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, Smith maintained that she never actually touched the children with the stun gun while making them stay in the electric chair position. She said she used the stun gun merely as a “scare tactic” by waving it close to them “with the electricity zapping between the stun-gun's metal prongs” when the kids misbehaved.
The children however, all reported receiving painful shocks.
The Sentinel went on to report that Smith had been watching her cousin’s children “for an indeterminate length of time,” with no reason as to why the kids weren't with their mother.
