Super Bowl parties are always a great way to spend time with friends and family, enjoy good food and a (hopefully) good football game. Even if the game is not great, there are always the commercials, right? Fitness enthusiasts, however, can find it difficult to enjoy Super Bowl parties because of the food (and the beer). Pizza, wings, cakes and cookies (and the beer) are all staples of these types of parties. Avoiding these tasty treats can make fitness enthusiasts miserable and unable to enjoy the game. Enjoying the foods can make the fitness-minded feel guilty. With that in mind, here are some ways that you can enjoy the game without eating the unhealthy food choices.
Eat Before the Party
Eating a healthy meal before the party will help keep you from getting hungry during the game. The tempting foods will not be as tempting if you are not hungry. Be sure to eat a meal that fits with your normal diet but that does not leave you feeling full and lethargic. You want to feel active and ready to have fun at the party.
Drink Water
Drink water during the game. Any time you feel hungry, get some water. Having water in your belly will trick your body into making you think that you are full. The hunger pangs will subside and you will be able to push on through. You will be able to eat your normal foods once you get back home.
Eat the Veggies
There is almost always a tray of raw veggies (carrots, celery, broccoli, etc.) at Super Bowl parties. You can even be the person who brings this tray. If you are hungry, get a small plate and a handful of veggies. Eat the veggies slowly, enjoying each bite. This will make the food last longer and keep you occupied so that you are not thinking about the other choices of food that are available.
Keep the Food Out of Sight
Think of the saying: "out of sight, out of mind." Position yourself so that you cannot see the food. If you sit or stand watching the game and have to turn all the way around to see the food, you will not think about it. If you can see the food simply by turning your head, then it will be a lot more tempting.
Focus on Conversations
It is a party, after all. Have fun and mingle. Get engaged in a conversation and focus on what is being said. This is a great way to meet new people while keeping your mind off the food. You can make some small side bets on the game and talk a little (light-hearted) trash. The more you can focus on anything but the food, the easier it will be to avoid the food.
