Five tips to a better family game night

See also

Did you know that more than 75 percent of families say they want more time together? A survey commissioned by Hasbro and conducted by Dr. Christine Carter shows that families want slow down and enjoy a few moments of togetherness. The family game night is a great way to gather everyone together with a break from the chaos.

Based on my interview with Dr. Carter, here are five tips to make your next family game night a successful one.

1. Ditch the electronics at the door

How can you focus on each other when someone's face is constantly in the screen of a smartphone? Make a rule for your next family game night - no electronics. Put the phones, tablets and any other distractions in a bin by the door. For the entire game time, electronics are off limits. Take the moment to re-connect with an actual conversation with the people around you.

2. Make a schedule and stick to it

Families often have hectic schedules. Make family game night a priority and add it to the weekly or monthly schedule. Everyone can look forward to the event and there are no excuses for making alternate plans.

3. Select games that everyone can play

Family game night should focus on the whole family. Find a selection of games that everyone can enjoy. If there is a large age gap between players, consider playing as a team. If everyone enjoys the games, family game night is more fun.

4. Don't keep score

Who doesn't like winning? Unfortunately, fierce rivalries can take away the fun of just playing and spending time together. Ditch the scoreboard and play for fun. If cheating is a problem, focus on games of chance to lessen the cheating issue.

5. Be the fun family game house

Kids are influenced by their friends. From what's cool to what's in, kids listen to their peers. Make game night a group event by having kids invite a friend or two. Order a pizza and turn up the tunes but ditch the electronics. Who knows what fun everyone can have over a game of Monopoly or Twister.

Re-connect with your family and enjoy a family game night together.
