Dining at a restaurant with a baby is tricky for any parent, but can be especially so for a nursing mom. Below are five tips for combining nursing and dining out so you can relax and let someone make food for you for a change.
1. Bring a hungry baby. The best time to arrive at a restaurant is when your baby is hungry but not ravenous. If your baby is hungry you can nurse first (see number four).
2. Pick a sweet spot. Find seating that will provide the right balance of comfort, space, and privacy. Booths are generally more comfortable and offer more privacy than a table, however, you won't be able to scoot back to give yourself more room should you need it.
3. Sit like a man. Without the luxury of reclining or space for a nursing pillow you may find your arms getting tired mid-meal. Crossing one leg over the other like a man allows you to use your upper calf, knee, and thigh to support your baby.
4. Nurse first. Get your baby latched before you look at the menu. After latching, your baby should be calm, or at least busy, while you peruse the specials. When the meal arrives your baby should be finished with theirs. Eating while nursing is doable but more difficult than eating while simply holding your baby.
5. Order wisely. Choose foods that are easy to eat with one hand such as wraps, tacos, quesadillas, sandwiches, kabobs, and foods that can be speared with a fork without slipping or dripping.
