One of the best ways to meet new people is to use an online dating site. It’s becoming more popular all the time, so your odds of meeting someone wonderful are better than ever. Once you have chosen a dating site, make the most of your experience by following these five tips for creating an eye-catching profile.
1) Your photo is key to attracting others. Post the best current pictures of yourself you can get. Get professional shots if you can afford them, or have a friend take several dozen photos and choose the best ones. Post several, including a head shot and full body photos.
Ladies: if you aren’t interested in hooking up, don’t post suggestive poses.
Guys: Naked chests turn most women off.
Everyone: No mirror shots or photos showing you posing with your ex, who has been cut out of the picture.
2) Create a memorable user name and headline that reflects something important about you. You can find inspiration from the title or lyrics of a favorite song, movie lines or puns. No one will remember bob3268899, but a music buff will wonder about jazzed4piano.
3) Answer all of the “optional” questions about yourself so that readers get a detailed picture of your personality. Be specific – instead of saying you love to walk on the beach, write that you love to watch the surfers at Ocean Beach or explore the tide pools at Moss Beach. Name your favorite restaurants, entertainment venues and destinations. When you write the “about me” and “about my date” fill it in with things about yourself you haven’t already mentioned. The more details you give, the easier it will be for someone attracted to you to notice you
4) Be positive. This is an ad, not a forum to air past grievances. Your goal is to cast a wide net and attract a variety of people to meet and screen. Posting phrases like “those with baggage need not apply” or “no drama” will turn off the very people you want to attract.
5) Update your profile every week to keep it fresh. Add new photos taken over the weekend, or change a few words here and there. Did you just discover a new restaurant? Dive bar? Mention it. It will keep your profile at the front of the pack.
Did I mention that you should use spell check? People do care!
Creating a magnetic profile takes a little time, but is often well worth the investment.
