Five tips for better fall foliage photography

See also

Fall is upon us and for many Minnesota photographers it means it is the start of their favorite time of year. Photographing fall foliage can be some of the most beautiful work you will ever do, but it can also be one of the most difficult types of photography. Below you will find five tips to improve your fall photos.

1. Use diffused light to capture the mood

If you have the opportunity to get out in the early morning you may be able to capture the fall colors through the fog and mist. this will add a different dimension to the ordinary allowing you to capture something extraordinary. The fog diffuses the light allowing you to focus directly on the colorful trees.

2. Use natural backlight

By taking advantage of the natural backlighting of the leaves you can achieve a beautiful fall photograph. Even on an overcast day you can use backlighting - one of the best tips is to angle you camera so the trees cover the overcast sky. This will still allow the light to shine through but will hide the overcast sky.

3. Move closer

By stepping in closer to your subject you will be able to take an otherwise bland photo and really make it pop. Focus on the detail of one colorful bush or tree and allow that to brighten up the entire photograph.

4. Use a polarizing filter

By using a polarizing filter you will reduce the glare from the leaves and enhance the over all color of the image. It will brighten a blue sky and deepen the reds, oranges and yellows of the fall foliage.

5. Saturate the image with color

This can be done by avoiding including the sky on overcast days. Bring the image in as close as you can and focus on metering your camera for the colors of the trees. By under exposing parts of the image you will increase the saturation of the tree colors.

If you keep these five tips in mind you too will be able to photography beautiful fall foliage.
