Five sweet snacks at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Touring the Walt Disney World theme parks can work up an appetite, which gives guests the perfect excuse to indulge in their favorite treats. At Disney's Hollywood Studios, a wide variety of sweet and savory snacks are available at carts and quick-service locations. In fact, Disney provides so many options that snacking around a theme park can be its own itinerary.

With that in mind, here is a mini-touring plan for five sweet snacks at Disney's Hollywood Studios (DHS), in no particular order.

What are your favorite sweet snacks at Disney?

Assorted cupcakes, Starring Rolls: If there's one thing Disney's loves to offer as baked goods, it is cupcakes piled high with a mountain of frosting. They're impressive, a bit daunting, and beg to be scaled by adventurous eaters. At Starring Rolls, the cupcakes have become the sugary stuff of legend, famed for the frosting and the flavors.

There are several varieties to choose from, but I recommend choosing any of the following, depending on what's available (still left) that day: Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake, Chocolate Butterfinger Cupcake, Marble Cupcake or the Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake. (Not in the mood for a cupcake? How about the tiramisu?)

Assorted Fudge, Beverly Sunset Sweet Spells: The fudge is one of many treats at Sweet Spells worth a mention, including cookies, brownies and chocolate strawberries. But the hefty hunks of fudge are made for sharing, and there is an almost overwhelming selection of flavors and combinations to choose from.

Plus, the fudge is so melt-in-your-mouth rich it is practically evil, an appropriate comparison given the store's name and theming to Disney villains. Stop by for a spell - or to fall under it - and stick around to watch the store's show kitchen if the Cast Members are hard at work.

Carrot Cake Cookie, Writer's Stop: This cult favorite is more cake than cookie, part of its appeal. Two moist carrot cake cookies are held together by a thick layer of cream-cheese frosting. Not-quite portable, it's part cookie, part flattened cupcake, all decadence and delicious enough to make people forget their manners and like their fingers in public.

The Carrot Cake Cookie is available at Writer's Stop, the bookstore and coffee shop near MuppetVision 3-D and the Streets of America. The cookie also made its to other places, including Sweet Spells candy shop. But stopping by Writer's Stop is part of the experience and enjoy a cookie with an iced or hot coffee drink. Or abandon your diet to another baked goodie or three.

Ice Cream, Dinosaur Gertie's: Admittedly, many places that serve ice cream at Disney offer fairly standard fare, and Gertie's is no different. But, like so many things, soft-serve ice cream is just more fun at Disney. And for a truly Disneyfied treat, Dinosaur Gertie's offers the iconic Mickey's Premium Ice Cream Bar.

What makes the snack experience especially memorable is the building itself. As its name suggests, the building is a giant dinosaur; it pays homage both to "California Crazy" (roadside) architecture and the animator Winsor McCay and his milestone film, "Gertie the Dinosaur" (1913). The setting is part Hollywood history, part theme-park fun, and all Disney.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Milkshake, Tune-In Lounge:Walt Disney World offers several milkshakes worth trading your Mickey bar for, and this guest favorite tops many lists. The  flavor combination is familiar while the delivery method - a thick ice cream - makes the shake memorable. It manages to feel both healthy (peanut butter is good for you, right?) and decadent at the same time.

The Peanut Butter & Jelly Milkshake is available as part of a visit to the '50s Prime Time Cafe, a table-service restaurant, if you're in the mood for a meal. But I tend to pick mine up at Tune-In Lounge right next door, the bar where you can order from '50s menu and even get your "to go."
