Five simple ways to ace your first semester

Most college students are leaving their homes this week for college.  This is an exciting time for any student and their family, but don’t forget; college is about academics.  Here are my top five tips for student success in college.

1.     Be prepared to feel overwhelmed.

And it’s ok! If you ask any person who’s been through the college experience they’ll tell you they were overwhelmed at some point in their college career.  The trick is to not panic.  To avoid feeling overwhelmed try to prepare yourself well in advance for your classes and dealing with college administration offices.  Make sure you have your social security number or college id number memorized because that will cut down time in lines and make you feel less nervous when getting in contact with college administration offices.  Also, attend all orientations and make sure you get your syllabi for each class and be clear about when all assignments are due.  The more organized you are, the less likely you’ll be to panic later.

2.     Set a clear goal for each class you’re taking.

Setting clear goals is important to any endeavor you’re facing in life, especially college.  The more specific your goals are the better!  Instead of, “I want to get an A in this class,” try, “I want to get an A on the first ten page paper I have to write.”  It’s also great to take the goals you’ve set for yourself and post them in a place you’ll look at often, like on a poster board or white board in your dorm room.  This will keep you focused on your goals and make you feel so accomplished when you reach them!

3.     Find your ideal study spot and make a study schedule.

Studying is critical to success in college.  But being comfortable when you study is critical to your mental health and academic success.  Whether your ideal study spot is under a big tree on the quad or a quiet corner in the library, if you’re comfortable you’ll have an easier time studying.  Setting a schedule for your homework and studies will also ensure that you’ll stay organized and have time for all of your assignments.  Sticking to a schedule will keep you calm and guarantee you’ll have time for all your studies.

4.     Introduce yourself to all of your professors, more than once.

Even if there are 300 people in your class make sure you take the time to meet your professor, more than once if possible.  If your professor knows you by name and you participate in class you will be more likely to get a better grade.  Don’t forget to be confident when introducing yourself.  Shake the professors hand, introduce yourself, and ask an interesting question so they will remember you.  This is also important because some professors will know about great internships or other campus activities that would look great on your resume.  Don’t be intimidated! Remember, professors were students at one point too.  They’ll appreciate the respect you’re giving them and you’ll make a great first impression.

5.     Have fun!

Don’t forget to have fun! Of course academics and grades are important, but having fun and socializing are also important for your college experience.  Your best bet is to get involved in on campus activities, like joining a club, sports team or volunteering for a charitable organization.  This is a great way to meet new people and take a break from your studies.

Attending college is a once in a lifetime experience.  Make sure you make the most of it, both academically and socially.  Remember, work hard and play hard!  Make the most of everyday and you’ll have an amazing college experience!
