Five resources for the new Java programmer

Learning the Java programming language takes time. But you can get started without spending a dime. Here are five free resources for new Java programmers.

1. The Java Tutorials by Oracle

The Java Tutorials on the Oracle web site are extensive and easy to follow. There are lessons for practically every aspect of Java. The concepts are backed by plenty of code samples.

2. Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel

Thinking in Java is a great book for learning and understanding Java. Author Bruce Eckel explains the concepts well and provides lots of examples. You can download a free version of the book from his web site or this link.

3. Discussion Groups

Participating in discussion groups is a great way to learn Java. Two great forums for Java beginners are New To Java and Beginning Java. Experienced Java programmers follow these groups and answer even the most basic questions.

4. Google+ Communities

Many Java programmers are active in Google+ communities. You can interact with them and ask questions in the Java, Programming and Computer Programmers Google+ communities.

5. Integrated Development Environments

Experienced Java programmers develop software in integrated development environments (IDEs). Netbeans, Eclipse and Oracle JDeveloper are three great IDEs that you can use. It takes time to learn these tools, but there are online documents and tutorials for beginners.
