All My Children and its proposed internet resurgence may both be things of the past, but Alicia Minshew, who spend ten years on the soap as reformed villainess Kendall Hart Slater, most certainly is not.
The two time Daytime Emmy nominee is plunging forward with the next phase of her career and is both endearing herself to her loyal fans and stretching her talents to embrace and capture the hearts of new ones. If you aren't familiar with All My Children, you may not be familiar with Alicia. Here are five reasons why you should be.
1. SHE'S A WONDERFUL ACTRESS
You would think that this should be a given, but, as is all too common with famous names and faces, real talent isn't always a part of the package. Alicia's got the stuff in spades. With the soap opera in her rear view, Alicia is testing her acting mettle in three new film roles. She stars as Southern artist Madeline in "Desires Of The Heart", a love story about the aforementioned Madeline and India born psychiatrist Kris Sharma (played by Val Lauren, famous for his role in the James Franco directed "Sal"), who is practicing in Savannah, Georgia. Alicia and the film, slated for release next year and shot in both Georgia and India, has already wowed critics and recently won the coveted award of Best Foreign Film at the Los Angeles Femme Film Festival.
Alicia will also be seen next year in the dark indie comedy "The Funeral Guest" as Robin, a sharp as nails attorney who is skeptical of a young woman posing as a long lost family member at a funeral. Alicia will grace the screen a third time in the emotionally pivotal cameo role as beloved and free-spirited Sarah in "Lies I Told My Little Sister", an indie family drama set in picturesque Cape Cod. And if that's not enough for this busy thespian...
2. SHE'S EMBRACING HER FANS, OLD AND NEW, THROUGH NEW MEDIA
There's no doubt about it; the internet and digital technology have permanently changed entertainment, how we watch it and how it's made. Some in Hollywood may balk at this, but then again, back in the 1930s, lots of industry insiders thought that the new "talkies" didn't have much of a future. We all know how that turned out. As smart and savvy as she is talented, Alicia knows that her fans, old and new, are online and she's following them in two exciting and high profile web series that reunite her with many of her daytime contemporaries.
Debuting in March will be Beacon Hill, a romantic drama set against the backdrop of Boston's political elite. Alicia headlines the series as New York reporter and lesbian Sara Preston, who returns to her hometown of Boston after her Senator grandfather has a stroke. She is faced with the family drama she left behind as well as her ex, Katherine, who is now running a Senate race of her own. Alicia is joined by a veritable who's who of daytime royality in the series, including favorites Sarah Brown (General Hospital), Ron Raines (Guiding Light), Crystal Chappell (Guiding Light) and Jessica Morris (One Life To Live), along with many more.
Alicia will also star in a second web series, Tainted Dreams, a behind-the-scenes comedy about the inner workings of a soap opera. Alicia plays Angelica, the senior producer of a fictional soap opera who has a knack for solving everyone's problems but her own.
3. SHE'S A PHILANTHROPIST
As a wife and mother, Alicia is not only grateful for what she has, she understands the importance of giving back. Not only does she donate time and materials to different homeless shelters in NYC, she is also involved in New York's Opening Act, which provides theater programs for under privileged schools, boosting the self confidence of students and keeping them away from crime and drugs. She is also active with City Year, a program that unites kids and young adults alike to keep them in school and on track.
4. SHE'S MADE TWERKING FUN AGAIN
If you'd like to see Alicia at her most fun loving, check her out at the New York office of the entertainment gossip site HollywoodLife.com. She twerks. And yes, she's much better than Miley could ever hope to be. This is a woman who not only makes a great actress, she has the kind of playfully gracious attitude that makes her a great celebrity. How many of those do we have nowadays?
5. SHE AIN'T HARD TO LOOK AT
As her picture attests, Alicia comes with one of the most gorgeous faces going in film and television today. Her trademark curls give her a timeless beauty that is doubtful to go out of style any time soon.
If all of this isn't enough for you to give her a second look, Alicia is ensuring she will continue to capture your attention. She is expanding her career yet again and taking on the role of producer. She will be producing her own starring vehicle, a romantic crime caper entitled Good Clean Fun, in which she will play the goody-two-shoes wife of a cheating husband who enlists the help of a former high school classmate turned cat burglar to teach her how to be “bad”. The film's cast is shaping up with exciting, well known talent including her Beacon Hill co-star Jessica Morris, TV heartthrob Rib Hillis and AMC legendary diva Jennifer Bassey.
So keep your eyes on Alicia Minshew. She may be little, but there's going to be a lot to look at.
