Just in time for the holidays, Lion Brand introduces new yarns to play with. Here are five of my favorites. You can find these yarns at most hobby and craft stores or you can purchase them directly from Lion Brand. If you decide to give these yarns a try, leave a comment below to let us know how you liked them.
Who doesn’t love the velvety softness of chenille yarn? Back when chenille was first available from other manufacturers, I crocheted a pillow using navy and steel blue in a giant granny square. Now, Lion Brand has yarn number 531, chenille, available. It retails for $5.49 a 2.5 oz., 100 yard skein. The yarn is 75 percent acrylic, 18 percent polyester, and 7 percent nylon. It is a bulky, size five yarn. Hand washing is recommended. Fourteen different colors are available from porcelain to amethyst.
You can create quick projects with this self-striping yarn. It comes in seven different colors. DaVinci is 53 percent wool and 47 percent acrylic. It retails for $6.49 for a 1.75 oz., 55 yard skein. This is a super-bulky yarn—size six. Look for yarn number 824.
Nothing is more luxurious than fabrics made from hand-dyed silk. Lion Brand realizes that many needle crafters love natural, high-end fibers for their projects. Welcome silk, LB Collection number 492. This yarn is available in eight different colors, all have variations in color throughout the skeins. Each skein weighs 1.75 ounces and it is made from 100 percent hand-dyed silk. Skeins are 150 yards and they retail for $25. each. This is a fine yarn, size two, and it would make wonderful light-weight garments or baby coverlets. Hand washing is recommended.
Yarn number 515, Imagine, is something all fiber artists should try. Composed of 40 percent acrylic, 30 percent wool, and 30 percent nylon, this yarn is formed into a tube. The tube shape allows you to create a scarf without knitting or crocheting. To use in needle work projects, you can pull the tube apart or use it to create texture in your projects. It retails for $5.99 for a 1.4 ounce, eight yard skein. Hand washing is recommended.
Add interest to your knitting and crochet projects with faux fur. Romance is different than fun fur and it is perfect for edging hats, scarves and gloves. The yarn is 84 percent nylon and 16 percent polyester. It retails for $5.49 for a 1.75 ounce, 27 yard skein. It is a nu,ber six sized yarn—super bulky. This yarn is machine washable.
Lynda Altman has been interested in needle work and crafts since she was a child. She learned to crochet and embroider before she reached high school. Crochet, beading and needlepoint are some of her favorite needle work pastimes. You can contact Lynda via email or @fusgeyer on Twitter.
