Square Enix released a fresh batch of screenshots from Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII earlier today. The new images feature one of the locations in the game called The Dead Dunes as well as one of the game's combat abilities called Lightspeed which slows the passage of time. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in the third game in the Final Fantasy XIII "mini-saga" and will conclude the story arc. Rather than controlling a party like in previous Final Fantasy games, Lightning will be the only playable character in this one. Since there is only one character to control, the combat system has been revamped so that instead of choosing your actions from a menu you can simply map actions to certain buttons on the controller. It is still ATB-based combat, but will be faster-paced and more intuitive.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled to release in the third quarter of 2013 (between July 1 - September 30) and will be available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
