With bad weather in the Chicago area, basketball teams have been put on hiatus after being off for over a week in many cases. The girls’ basketball season has just under two months to go before the postseason gets underway. There are at least 10 or 12 teams that could win a state title this season but there are five teams in particular that have the best chance of getting the job done in the end. Here are those five teams.
Montini- The Broncos are the class of the area at this point beating every other major team in their way so far this season. Kateri Stone led a victory over Rolling Meadows to win the Montini tournament and will be a key factor if the team wants to take home a Class 3A title.
Rolling Meadows- The Mustangs may have lost to Montini but the combination of Jackie Kemph, Jenny Vliet and Alexis Glasgow is going to be very hard to beat in the postseason. Meadows lost the Class 4A title game last season in the final seconds and won’t want that to happen again this year.
Fremd- Haley Golecki has been a star again this year in her junior season and with the Vikings 12-2 on the season, it will be key for her to continue her hot play especially in a loaded Mid-Suburban League. Fremd will likely find themselves in the MSL title game.
Prospect- If there is a team that could challenge Rolling Meadows in the MSL East, it would be the Knights. They sit at 13-1 after finishing second at the Charger Classic for their first loss of the season. Taylor Will is nearing 1,000 career points and is just a junior. This is a young team that may even better next year.
Hersey- Another MSL East division power like Prospect and Rolling Meadows but with a 14-1 start and Wheaton North tournament title, the Huskies are just as dangerous as the other two teams in their division. There are three games against Prospect and Rolling Meadows ahead however to prove what they can do.
