The calendar has turned to 2014 and with that comes the second half of the high school basketball season. There are several teams that bear watching as the regular season winds down across the Chicago area. Here are five boys basketball teams that fans should make the effort to go see.
Stevenson- The Patriots are 11-0 on the season and won the Proviso West tournament over the holidays. Jalen Brunson is the real deal and was named MVP of the tournament. If Stevenson can continue their hot play for another couple months, don’t be surprised if they win the Class 4A title.
Fremd- An undefeated start to the season and a Wheeling tournament victory has launched the Vikings to 13-0 on the season. They beat St. Viator in the championship game at Wheeling and have played just one home game all season which may give them a huge home court advantage the rest of the year.
St. Viator- While the Lions did lose to Fremd at Wheeling; this is still a team that will do some major damage going forward. Ore Arogundade and Roosevelt Smart are Division I prospects. Viator is well on their way to their best season in a very long time if not ever in their school history.
York- Another undefeated team that is under the radar some and must be watching closely. They may not get the same coverage than the other teams do around the area but anytime a team is undefeated in early January, they are worth watching.
Crystal Lake South- The Gators are 11-2 going into January and while the Fox Valley Conference is tough with the likes of Huntley and Jacobs floating around, no one would be shocked if South ends up winning the whole thing in the end behind Austin Rogers.
