As Season 5 of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” nears its end, the show's feisty stars never fail to entertain me. The January 20 episode was filled with its requisite fireworks. But I find that reality TV’s more subtle thrills are sometimes the most fascinating. And it just so happens that the 12th installment of RHOA contained quite a few of those. If an episode could have its own Golden Globe-type awards, they might go something like this…
Most Uncomfortable Exit From a Scene
This award would go to the production designer who makes a queasy retreat from the room once Kandi and Kenya start bickering about business. Clearly, he’s seen this show before.
Most Awkward Name-Drop
Unfortunately, Phaedra scores this prize for giving a shout-out to Jane Fonda -- and their fabulous Galapagos vacation – during a meeting with Will and Darren. It’s not surprising that Parks and Fonda are friends. It’s odd that she didn’t hit up her pal Jane (the godmother of all workouts) in the first place for help with the “Donkey Booty” video. No offense, Kenya.
Most Inappropriate Moment of the Hour
Speaking of meetings, it’s during this business chat that Parks puts her husband Apollo on the spot. “Show him some moves, baby,” she asks, egging him on with seedy innuendos about their nightly bedroom routines. (Crickets.)
Best Orchestrated Cameo Appearance
This award is shared with T.I. and Tiny’s adorable boys, Major and King, who just so happen to pop up in a few scenes at the fashion show rehearsal. At one point, cameras catch little Major making a mad dash into Cynthia’s arms. Note to self: Their modeling experience would probably serve as fodder in a 3rd season of Harris family’s reality show.)
Most Unexpected Moment of the Hour
Before the Runway Red children’s fashion show, Phaedra and Cynthia have a conversation that consists of spelling out words: Apparently, Ayden is of the eavesdropping age. Their attempt to speak in code was weird, but cute. But the totally random exchange just seemed to go on forever. I don’t know how I feel about this.
