Five area softball players were named to the 2014 preseason All-Houston team this past week. First team selectees included Barbers Hill infielder Erin Houthoofd and Huffman shortstop Christina Bardwell. Crosby catcher Ariel Clogston, and Barbers Hill’s Sara and Randi Rupp were named to the second team.
Houthoofd, a sure handed infielder and smooth swinging hitter committed two errors in the field while wielding the hottest bat in the Lady Eagles lineup. She posted team high stats with a .468 batting average, 52 hits, 16 extra basehits including a team high 7 home runs, a .502 on-base percentage and a 1.261 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Bardwell swung one of the Lady Falcons biggest bats in 2013. She enters the 2014 season on the heels of a sophomore season in which she hit .405 with 31 hits including 10 for extra bases (2 doubles, 8 homers) with 24 rbi’s.
Clogston, the Crosby Lady Cougars senior backstop with a .400 batting average collected 36 rbi’s on 36 hits in 2013. Twenty of her 36 hits were crushed for extra bases including eight that left the yard.
Catcher Sara Rupp was a force behind the plate for the Barbers HillLady Eagles with one error in 303 chances and at the plate with a .316 average.
Lady Eagles pitcher Randi Rupp was one of the most dominant pitchers in the Houston area in 2013. From the circle, Rupp hurled a team high 90.1 innings with a 17-1 record in 20 appearances. The hard throwing right-hander with a 182/16 strikeout to walk ratio posted a miniscule .077 ERA.
