Five-Alarm Fire is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Jan. 11, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert expansion set "Gatecrash." Revealed on a post to the BJ Shea's Geek Nation Facebook fan page, Five-Alarm Fire is an inexpensive method for red mages to destroy a large creature or deal those last few points of damage to an opponent.
Five-Alarm Fire - 1RR
Enchantment (Rare)
Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage, put a blaze counter on Five-Alarm Fire.
Remove five blaze counters from Five-Alarm Fire: Five-Alarm Fire deals 5 damage to target creature or player.
There's no need to deal combat damage to your opponent to get a blaze counter on Five-Alarm Fire. Your blocking or blocked creatures will also add to its blaze count. What makes Five-Alarm Fire particularly effective though is that you don't need to sacrifice it. That means a turn three Five-Alarm Fire has the potential to be used multiple times over the course of a long game. Because you need to deal combat damage five times before your Five-Alarm Fire becomes active, the best way to turn it on would be in a deck packed with fast creatures.
Cards like Thatcher Revolt in a Boros based human deck alongside Gather The Townsfolk and Champion of the Parish might be the right shell to slot Five-Alarm Fire into. Should you decide to go the Boros route, you'll also want to include Boros Charm to protect your weenies from board sweepers like Supreme Verdict or to deliver the final burning blow.
Another deck Five-Alarm Fire could be put to good use in is Goblins, with Krenko's Command and Krenko, Mob Boss providing a supply of 1/1's to attack with.
Gruul players needn't worry if an opponent's Akroma's Memorial gives their creatures protection from red because they have access to cards that give your creatures trample such as Rancor, Ghor-Clan Rampager, and Kessig Wolf Run which will allow your creatures to deal combat damage to your opponent and turn Five-Alarm Fire on.
How will you use Five-Alarm Fire?
