Renfield is a complex character, he's crazy not because he wants to be, Dracula a turns him into this crazed man with the love of the thought of mortality. We've seen him drain the blood from animals and even eat some bugs, since Bram Stoker wrote about Renfield, there has been someone that has starred as the character for the movie adaptations. This list is going to look at some actors who have played Reinfield. You'll noticed that the 1970s was a big year for "Dracula" movies.
1. Dwight Fyre from "Dracula" (1931)
Fyre gave a pretty wonderful performance as Renfield, and he's also the first character that you really meet in the movie. He besides Bela, took over the screen with their performances. His crazed laughter, his tragic self, the outrages that he went through etc, made Renfield a character that moviegoers couldn't forget about. For those who didn't know the 1931 film is based on the broadway play, "Dracula" that had been written by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston.
2. Tom Waits from "Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula" (1992)
As a fan of Tom Waits and his music it's always fun to say that he starred as Renfield in Coppola's version of "Dracula." This one is probably the better modern versions that have came out of the "Dracula" franchise. For the screen-time that Waits had he did well.
3. Klaus Kinski from "Count Dracula" (1970)
Jesus Franco directed this Dracula film that just so happened to star as Christopher Lee as Dracula. It's interesting to note that this isn't a Hammer Production. It's also interesting to note that Klaus Kinski played Count Dracula in the 1970s film "Nosferatu the Vampyre." That is the remake of the silent movie with Count Orlock, another version of Stoker's Dracula.
4. Tony Haygarth from "Dracula" (1979)
In 1979 John Badham directed Frank Langella as the Count, Laurence Olivier was Jonathan Harker, but one actor was Renfield, Tony Haygarth. Haywarth played Milo Renfield, in this film he was a workman that Dracula enslaved.
5. Jack Shepherd from "Dracula" (1977)
Louis Jordan took on the role as "Dracula" in this BBC mini-series. The role Renfield was played by Jack Shepherd. Many have hailed this version has one of the best adaptations . Shephered gave very sympathetic role as Renfield.
So while we may always think of Dracula, let's not forget about his faithful (not all the time) servant, many actors have starred as him and many more are to come...
