At the New York Comic Con "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." panel and viewing on Saturday, Oct. 12, Elizabeth Henstridge (who portrays Jemma Simmons) and Iain De Caestecker (actor, Leo Fitz) discussed the nature of their characters' relationship.
Fans have been speculating about the science duo - they finish each other's sentences and have a 'luck' theme going on that indicates a significant amount of history. Plus, we know they've been through school together.
At the panel, De Caestecker confirmed that Fitz and Simmons are "not related," but admitted that they act like siblings at times. Henstridge commented that Fitz and Simmons act more like a "strange old couple." Either way, it's interesting that the actors have not yet figured out the exact nature of their characters' relationship.
What does this mean for the future of the "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." team?
We are set to think of FitzSimmons as one entity. When tragedy arrives - or when duty calls the agents in different directions - how will they react without each other? And if they aren't each other's love interests, what happens if either of them becomes interested in someone else?
The possibility of romance is not beyond the scope of either character, however it is refreshing to see two characters immensely focused on their work more than anything else.
