Sunday night in Denver, soul band Fitz and the Tantrums played to a sold-out crowd at the Ogden Theater, demonstrating to the enthusiastic fans just why they have experienced such a quick rise to fame.
After opening sets from Denver band American Tomahawk and Michigan-based Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Fitz and the Tantrums took the stage at around 10:00 PM with “Don’t Gotta Work It Out,” followed by their hit “Breakin’ the Chains of Love,” setting up a Sunday night party atmosphere for the rest of the evening. With spot-on vocals and high-energy stage presence, frontman Fitz and co-vocalist (and Denver native) Noelle Scaggs engaged the audience from the jump, getting them moving and singing along in no time flat, while the stellar grooves laid down by the drums, bass, organ and saxophone only added fuel to the fire.
Since forming barely three years ago, Fitz and the Tantrums gained a national following almost immediately with their initial EP release Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1, recorded in Fitz’s living room. Now, with their full-length debut Picking Up the Pieces (which contains several songs from the original EP), the band’s momentum is only increasing. The fact that a fairly new band can sell out the Ogden on a Sunday night is proof enough of that.
What’s their secret? Nothing innovative—just really good, blue-eyed soul. Catchy hooks, even catchier rhythms, and world-class performances from world-class musicians. A simple formula for success—and it’s obviously working for them.
With all the experimentation today to come up with new sounds, sometimes all people want is a really good groove. This band has that in spades, and they delivered on Sunday night. Fitz and the Tantrums is a class act, and they’re bringing soul back to the limelight. It's likely they’ll sell out a far larger venue than the Ogden next time they come to town.
