Women are becoming busier than ever these days. We have mastered the art of multi-tasking like none other. We can become the CEO's of companies and the head of the PTA all while having dinner on the table by 6 before we head out for drinks with the girls. We can even run for president, if we wanted. It seems as if there is always a way to fit everything into a schedule except exercise. How ironic is it that we can break away for that happy hour martini but can't seem to fit in 30 minutes of cardio. I asked a group of women the big question WHY? and they answered as I expected, "There is just not enough time in the day," "My children won't allow it" "I can't afford it" "I just don't have the motivation". All were excuses that I have found ways to remedy. However, one answer left me searching for answers..."I CAN'T WORKOUT BECAUSE OF MY HAIR"....and while naturally I want to burst into laughter at this sad excuse, the burden still exists, and I realized that this is a huge problem with women. Not only hair but with other aspects of feminine hygiene. Should she take a run during her lunch and risk being sweaty? Is a pony tail or curly fro resulting from a hard workout really acceptable at work? Is there a simple solution that woman can adopt to ensure they get an adequate amount of daily exercise without compromising short term vanity.
Isn't it true that when you feel that you look bad you are less likely to be productive at work or at home? How many times have you said "I am just not feeling it today” So what can we do about it?
I have come up with a few ways to end the war between fitness and vanity, especially with hair.
1. Schedule an Intense workout on the day that you wash your hair: Most of us wash our hair 2-3 times a week right? So, how about making your workout on those days a TOUGH SWEATY ONE; with the idea that on the other days you can go light with it. Here is a good one.
2. Wrap and Cover your hair prior to a workout. Try wrapping you hair and tying it with a silk scarf before you start your exercise regimen. A pony tail will work too!
3. Do more Anaerobic (strength training) workouts: We all know that cardio (aerobic) exercises will pump up the sweat quickly. Of course, strength training will make you sweat too, but probably not nearly as much.
4. Wear Dry-Fit Head Gear: Nike and other sports lines have amazing head gear, like hats and bands, to control the moisture in your head. They work for me and they are stylish.
5. Incorporate more time to do your hair: Wake up earlier if you have to in order to get dolled up post workout. Don't make yourself rush to work or your next appointment.
6. Shrug, Forget about it, and KEEP MOVING: Something’s got to give right? I mean really, what’s the alternative.... not workout and reap all the nasty results of being inactive? I don’t think so. I'd rather sweat a little have mediocre hair throughout the week and get my body in top notch shape so that for my next event or party or beach outing I can look amazing. THAT’S JUST ME ...
