It's International Walk to School Day and local Palm Springs students, parents, school faculty and members of the community including professional boxer Timothy Bradley came out to celebrate. The temperature was a chilly 63 degrees this morning in the desert when hundreds joined in for Katherine Finchy Elementary's Walk to School Day event.
Starting off at the Palm Springs Convention Center, enthusiastic students were given stickers, bracelets, temporary tattoos and a 'Get to School Safely' flyer that illustrated the pedestrian rules of the road.
Led by the school's physical education teacher, Mrs. Diaz, students headed along Avenida Caballeros around 8AM towards Finchy Elementary where healthy snacks were handed out for a job well done.
"It's kind of intimidating seeing that many kids coming toward you!" chuckled a passerby out for a morning walk near Ruth Hardy Park as students made their way to the school.
Although International Walk to School Day comes along once a year, Finchy Elementary takes fitness seriously. They've instituted a Walk to School Day the last Wednesday of every month throughout the school year. A successful program that seems to be growing as more kids take to the notion that walking to school is not only good for you, but fun, too!
