When it comes to discussions of the top fitness gurus in the nation, Tony Horton ranks as one of the hottest. Creator of the uber-popular P90X fitness program, Tony talked with the Huffington Post on September 12 on topics ranging from training celebrities to yoga as a lifesaver. And most of all, Tony revealed the passion that has resulted in the sale of more than 3.5 million copies of his 90-day program.
The program that made Tony famous is "POWER 90: Tony Horton's Total Body Transformation 90 Day Boot Camp DVD Workout" (click for details). But Tony is humble about his success, emphasizing his goal of enhancing his followers' health through fitness rather than building up his fame.
"One of the things that's most important to me is making sure more and more people have the information they need to live a long and happy life," he says. "You should train because you want to be happy. It's all about happiness and wellness and being less vulnerable to illness and injury. That's why I do this."
In addition to his DVDs such as the Power Half Hour Stretch, Tony has taken on the role of celebrity trainer to the rich and famous. Among his clients: Tom Petty, Billy Idol, Annie Lennox, Stephen Stills and Stevie Nicks. "So I had all these rockers during the 70s and 80s, and my job was to keep them healthy and fit," recalls Tony.
Although he's done many different types of workouts, Tony names yoga as one of his all time favorites.
"Yoga saved my life, absolutely," recalls Tony. "It was the most important step in my process of learning about exercise. Yoga is the fountain of youth, there's no question about it. It's a monster. The reason yoga is in there is that it's that thing you're in fear of, to some level, be it patience or range of motion or balance or strength. It's like running on your hands, you know. It's just hard. But the idea here is to keep pushing."
And now, the question that everyone always asks: What does the ultimate fitness guru eat to kick-start his day?
Tony's usual breakfast consists of "Steel-cut oatmeal with water, blackberries and blueberries -– no salt, no sugar. And then I'll probably have four or five egg whites scrambled with sautéed onions, peppers and basil -– double the basil -– and I'll throw some slices of avocado on top of that. I'll probably skip the toast."
Tony recently appeared on Dr. Mehmet Oz's talk show to dish about his transformation diet tips. You can get the secrets to weight loss success from Tony and his shake recipe by clicking here.
