On Tuesday, March 22, the first production Fisker Karma plug-in hybrids began assembly in Uusikaupunki, Finland by Valmet Automotive. In about a month Karmas should begin making their way into showrooms.
Similar to Chevrolet's early Volt concept (not production models), the Karma's on-board gasoline engine is not directly coupled to the wheels; the GM-sourced 2.0L turbo-four gas engine only spins the generator. Motive force comes from the two AC motors (402 horsepower combined) mounted in front of the rear differential, power for which comes from a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fisker says the Karma can travel up to 50 miles on electricity alone.
If you can handle the $88,000 starting price, be sure to stop by Fisker of Cleveland for more information.
