The Fishtank Performance Studio, an intimate 30-seat venue, mounts the production of 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Rajiv Joseph’s play, Gruesome Playground Injuries.
“Gruesome Playground Injuries follows the decades-spanning relationship of an accident-prone dare devil and a corrosive masochist who navigate friendship, love, and the wounds created in between,”Heidi Van, Fishtank curator, said.
Directed by Sidonie Garrett, Heart of America Shakespeare Artistic Director, the play stars Chris Roady (KCAT’s Picnic and KC Rep’s Death of a Salesman) and Heidi Van.
“Doug (Chris Roady) and Kayleen (Heidi Van) first meet in the nurse's office at the age of eight: Doug rode his bike off the roof and Kayleen can't stop throwing up. Over the course of the next 30 years, their lives continue to intersect at the most bizarre intervals and places, leading the two childhood friends to compare scars and the physical calamities that keep drawing them together,” Van said.
Van, who produces the play, assembled an all female production team to bring this play from concept to concert. The production team for Gruesome Playground Injuries includes Mary Nichols (set design ), Shara Abvidi (lighting design ), Tabatha Terry-Treml (make-up and gruesome wounds), Nihan Yesil (sound deisgn ), Arwen Thomas (costume designer) and Chloe’ Robbins-Anderson (stage manager), Sidonie Garrett (director).
