4/17/10 Game Recap

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats ended the Binghamton Mets five game winning streak with authority on Saturday.  A 10-run fourth inning was more than enough as the Fisher Cats roughed up Binghamton starter Eddie Kunz (1-1, 9.72) en route to a 13-8 victory.

Kunz only gave up two hits in 3.1 innings, but five walks did not help his cause.  Derrick Ellison relieved Kunz and didn't fare much better as he gave up a 2-run double to the first batter he faced and another later in the inning.

As a staff, the B-Mets walked 11 Fisher Cats on Saturday, six of them coming from a bullpen that has been very solid over Binghamton's now defunct five game winning streak.

The B-Mets charged out of the gate hard, as they did last night when they scored all nine runs in two innings but Saturday their five runs in the second inning were not enough.

D.J. Wabick got the B-Mets on the board with an RBI single and in the process, broke out of an 0-12 slump.  Jose Coronado added an RBI single later in the inning, but the big hit came from Luis Hernandez, who doubled with the bases juiced.  He extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The B-Mets came back with two runs in the fifth inning, to pull to within 10-7.  After Marshall Hubbard grounded into a double play, Lucas Duda hit his fifth double of the year to right field.  He moved to third on a wild pitch to Zach Lutz and Lutz then proceeded to drive him in when he hit a deep line drive to left that cleared the fence.  It was his third straight game with a long ball.

The last run of the day for the B-Mets came in the sixth inning on a Coronado home run to make it 10-8, but three more Fisher Cats runs in the seventh put any hopes of a Binghamton comeback on ice.

Hernandez, Duda, Lutz and Coronado all had two hit days in the losing cause.  After three hits last night, Nick Evans got one Saturday and is hitting .372 on the season.

Binghamton (6-4) will look to rebound tomorrow as they finish up the series in New Hampshire.  Eric Niesen (0-1, 3.12) will take the mound for the B-Mets, against Luis Perez (1-0, 0.00).  The game is set for a 1:35 PM start.
